The Black Panther universe is growing! In addition to the Oscar-winning streak of films, Marvel is developing a Wakanda-focused series for Disney +. According to Deadline, Ryan Coogler, the director of features, will be responsible for the project.
According to the website, the series will be a drama based on the Kingdom of Wakanda, which will also gain even greater prominence in Black Panther 2. The series is part of a multi-year agreement between Ryan Coogler and his company Proximity Media with Disney, and will include other television projects in the future.
Bob Iger, CEO of Walt Disney, said:
“Ryan Coogler is a unique storyteller, whose vision and reach made him one of the most remarkable filmmakers of his generation. With Black Panther, Ryan brought an innovative story and iconic characters to life, in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a defining cultural moment. We are excited to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more stories with Ryan and his team. ”
Ryan Coogler spoke on the news:
“It is an honor to be associated with Walt Disney. Working with them on “Black Panther” was a dream come true. As a big TV consumer, we couldn’t be happier to launch our TV shows with Bob Iger, Dana Walden, and all the amazing Disney studios. We are eager to learn, grow and connect with audiences around the world through Disney platforms. We’re especially excited to take the first step with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios, where we’ll be working closely on selected MCU projects for Disney +. We are already discussing some projects and look forward to announcing them.
Ryan Coogler continues to develop Black Panther 2, which is slated for release in July 2022. Further details on the Wakanda series have not been released.
