Salma Hayek talks about playing Ajak in the movie

Originally announced for November of last year, The Eternals suffered postponements due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite this, the film went into post-production again last year, and for now it is slated for release this year. Salma Hayek, who will play Ajak’s character in the film, has commented a bit on her role in the upcoming launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in an interview with Variety.

In the interview, Hayek revealed that he didn’t know anything about Ajak until he signed the contract and that he had to close the deal before even reading the script. Although she described the situation as baffling, the actress said she had good reason to accept the role even without having read the project, praising director Chloe Zhao and citing some of the character characteristics she will play:

“I love the director. She is awesome. And I also like Ajak to be the leader a bit. She is the only one who can speak to the Celestials. And I said, ‘I can be bossy in this role too. I can interpret this. Give instructions, tell people what to do, I can do it. “

It is remarkable in Hayek’s speech to mention the Celestials, given the actress’ claim that only her character can communicate with them. In the comics, the Celestials were responsible for creating the Eternals, which can also be the case in the movies. In the MCU, the main references to these powerful beings have been given in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, with Lugarnenhum being one of the most striking places the team visited, no less than the severed head of a celestial.

In her interview, Salma Hayek also said that The Eternals “has a completely different DNA from other Marvel movies.” According to her, most of the filming took place in real locations, with most of the films not being made in post-production. The actress also said the cinematography was “amazing”.

Hayek and other cast members at D23’s announcement

Hayek also said he was delighted to see himself as Ajak for the first time:

“It was stimulating. It moved me a lot … I was told [no começo da carreira], “It will never work for you here”. I represent. And it’s not because I’m wearing a costume, but we’ve all earned the right to be superheroes today. I am also 54 years old. So there was something really moving, not just for me, but for everything, all the different stereotypes. She’s not sexy. You know what I mean? She is absolutely not sexy. I am very small. I’ve been bullied my whole life for being short. And suddenly, it doesn’t matter. You are a superhero in the Marvel Universe. It really moved me.

In addition to Salma Hayek playing Ajak, the cast of the film will also include Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Barry Keoghan as Druig and Kit Harington as Dane Whitman / Black Knight.

Currently, Os Eternos’ release date is November 5 of this year, in theaters only.
