THE “WONDER KID” TO GET A SHOT AT WBA FLYWEIGHT TITLE AFTER WINNING BIG IN MACAU.
Rex Tso will get a historic shot at the WBA International super flyweight title in July after a hard fought win in Macau this weekend.
Before a sold-out crowd of 8,000 fans at The Venetian Macau’s Cotai Arena, Tso went toe-to-toe with Filipino boxer Michael Enriquez, securing a unanimous points victory of 95-94, 95-94, 96-93 on the judges’ cards.
The win guarantees Tso a shot at the WBA International super flyweight title – a first for any Hong Kong boxer – and will face Kohei Kono from Japan in Macau on 18 July.
“I want Hong Kong to see that I’m another Bruce Lee,” an emotional Tso told media in a post-fight interview. The win takes Tso unbeaten streak to 16 wins.
Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank which this week signed a two-year deal to co-promote Tso, described him as a great warrior.
The multi-bout Macau card was headlined by the IBF world flyweight title fight between two-time Chinese Olympic gold medallist and national icon Zou Shiming and defending champion Amnat Ruenroeng.
Thailand’s Ruenroeng retained his title with a unanimous points victory over Zou, with judges scoring the fight 116-111 as Zou struggled to land clean punches.
In all 12 rounds, the more experienced Ruenroeng widely outboxed Zou, who has just seven professional fights to his record. Ruenroeng is now on an unbeaten streak of 15 wins.
“Without losing you cannot fully enjoy the sweet taste of victory,” Zou told reporters at a post-fight press conference.
“I don’t think I was outboxed, just that he had more experience in this type of fight.”
