Marvel is heading for diversity!
Haaz Sleiman, star of the upcoming Marvel Eternals movie, is thrilled to represent the franchise’s first openly gay couple. Your character will be married to Phastos, hero played by Brian Tyree Henry.
In an interview with NewNowNext, Sleiman spoke about the importance of bringing the first gay characters from the Marvel films to screen. The actor took the opportunity to give more details about his role:
“This is my first Marvel movie, so of course I’m excited. My feeling is that you will be very proud. What Marvel was able to accomplish… made me very, very proud, because they approach it very carefully, and Phastos is one of the greatest superheroes in the movie. I play your husband, an architect, and we have a child.
In February last year, Sleiman confirmed that the couple would kiss in the film, saying:
“It’s a very beautiful and touching kiss. Everyone cried on set. For me it is very important to show how loving and beautiful a gay family can be. Brian Tyree Henry is a great actor and brought a lot of beauty to this role […] I think it’s very important to remind the world that we in the queer community are like that too. We forget this because we are always portrayed as sexual or rebellious. We have forgotten our connection to the human part.
Eternos promises to introduce a new team of superheroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a millennial alien group that lives on Earth in secret.
The film is directed by Chloe Zhao from the screenplay by Mathew and Ryan Firpo, and stars big stars like Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington and Kumail Nanjiani. Its debut is scheduled for November 5, 2021.
