Gérard Depardieu is accused of rape and sexual harassment

Gérard Depardieu, a French actor known for films like Asterix and Obelix, was charged with rape and sexual harassment in a 2018 case. The information comes from the AFP agency (via Variety), which confirms that the prosecution has been formalized by the police.

In 2019, the case was dropped for lack of evidence, but it reopened in 2020 with criminal charges formalized in December.

Depardieu, 72, is accused by a 20-year-old actress who claims to have been raped at her Paris home in August 2018. The identity of the victim has not been revealed in the press.

The actor is under judicial supervision. Hervé Temime, Depardieu’s lawyer, says his client completely rejects the accusations. Elodie Tuaillon-Hibon, the victim’s lawyer, said she would try to preserve her client’s privacy.

Sources familiar with the matter told AFP that the actor is a friend of the victim’s family. Other AFP sources claim Depardieu and the victim were rehearsing for a play, but say there was only one professional meeting.

Gérard Depardieu is one of the most famous French actors in the world, being nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor by Cyrano, in addition to other awards such as Golden Globe and Emmy. In his program, he has films like 1492: The Conquest of Paradise, The Man in the Iron Mask and the Asterix and Obelix franchise.
