The inspiration behind two of the franchise’s greatest characters!
Sub-Zero and Scorpion are extremely important characters when it comes to Mortal Kombat. While the history of the two in the game world is well known, now franchise co-creator John Tobias has revealed more information about the duo’s origins compared to how they were created. (via ComicBook).
Tobias said the inspiration for the Sub-Zero clan, the Lin Kuei, came from the book China’s Ninja Connection (Ninja Connection from China, in free translation), which talks about the relationship of Japanese ninjas with China. Avoiding discussing the veracity of the information provided by the book, the Mortal Kombat co-creator explained that he and Ed Boon began to develop the famous rivalry between the characters based on the book. So they decided to make Sub-Zero a member of Lin Kuei, from China, while Scorpion was part of the Japanese Shirai Ryu clan.
At first, Tobias and Boon already had the idea of using ninjas with different color palettes to save space in the game. The story inspired by the book allowed to better contextualize the characters, in addition to bringing more from serious to the rivalry between Sub-Zero and Scorpion, which would thus have historical influences. An initial concept for Sub-Zero was also shared by the Mortal Kombat co-creator, and you can check out the image below:
In his Twitter feed, Tobias further explained that creating such a backdrop for the characters’ story not only allowed them to be connected, but also placed them in easily recognizable archetypes for players. While one of the ninjas would take on the role of “hunter”, the other would be “hunted” – something that reached audiences through the tale of Scorpion hunting Sub-Zero because of what he suffered as a result. by Lin Kuei.
Decades after the launch of the first Mortal Kombat, the rivalry between the two ninjas remains one of the most notable elements of the franchise. Soon, the live-action adaptation of the game will tell you again about the start of Sub-Zero and Scorpion, although it’s not yet clear how equal it will be to what we see in video games.
