David Ayer responds to claim Ayer Cut won’t be released

The campaign to launch the Snyder Cut, which culminated in the launch of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, has recently entered a new phase. In addition to calling for the restoration of Snyderverso, fans say other directors whose views have been affected by the cuts the studio has made should have a chance to relaunch their films as desired, with the campaign focusing primarily on the so-called Suicide Squad Ayer. Cut. Now WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff has said the studio will not be releasing another version of David Ayer’s film, and the director has responded to his Twitter account (via ComicBookMovie).

In a lengthy interview with Variety, Sarnoff commented on Warner’s chances of agreeing to continue the Snyder universe, as well as whether the studio would release other directorial releases, like Suyer Squad’s Ayer Cut. In answering this last question, the head of Warner got right to the point, giving no explanation, and just saying “We’re not going to develop David Ayer’s version.”

The lack of justification was noted by Ayer himself, who only commented on his Twitter account with a “Why?” 🥺 ”, showing his disappointment at Sarnoff’s categorical claim that Warner will not give him the opportunity he gave Snyder. It’s possible that, given the success of the Snyder Cut, Ayer believed the chances of a director’s version of Suicide Squad happening were greater, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Does Ayer Cut already exist?

According to David Ayer himself, the answer is yes. Since last year, the director has commented on his version, and has already stated that it not only exists, but that it is almost finished, requiring only the addition of a few special effects. In another speech, he was very enthusiastic about his version, saying he had watched it for the first time in October of last year, and that “She’s crazy”, sounding the same tone than the trailer that aired at Comic Con.

The film the director intended to make was meant to feature a much larger development of Jared Leto’s Joker, which would be more menacing than the Suicide Squad, which was hitting theaters. Another character Ayer suggested to have suffered from the modifications was Magia, who would be better elaborated in his original take on production. The relationship between the Harlequin and the Gunslinger was yet another altered element, and the director intended to build a romance between the two.

Many fans have changed their minds about Jared Leto’s Joker after seeing him in Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Many have defended the launch of the Ayer Cut after Zack Snyder’s Justice League, not least because of the Joker. In an interview with NME, the director had previously shown his dissatisfaction with what the film showed of Leto’s work, apparently not doing justice to the actor’s interpretation of the Clown of Crime:

“Jared was treated very badly during all of this. No one has seen your performance. He was removed from the film.

Despite performing well at the box office, Suicide Squad received heavy criticism and displeased many DC fans. On Twitter, Ayer commented on the matter, and in answering the question of why his version couldn’t air on HBO Max, he said it would be cathartic to be able to release it after suffering criticism from a film which is not the true fruit of your vision:

“That’s a good question. My cut would be easy to finish. It would be incredibly cathartic for me. It’s exhausting to be attacked by a movie that got the Edward Scissorhands treatment. The movie I made didn’t. has never been seen.

Besides Ayer himself, Jared Leto and Zack Snyder have already shown their support for the launch of Ayer Cut. Despite this, the release of another version of the film seems unlikely, especially since Warner seems determined to take another path with the group, whose next film will be directed by James Gunn. Ann Sarnoff’s speech seems to reinforce that idea even further, although fans haven’t given up on the campaign.
