The characters in the plot are inspired by other anime and manga!
Jujutsu Kaisen arrived not long ago but is already conquering anime and manga fans once and for all. The plot revolves around a high school student who joins a secret society of wizards in order to destroy a curse that hits him. Since its inception, the manga has incorporated several elements of other shonen classics, and now the creator of this universe has spoken a bit about those tributes.
In a recent appearance on Fuji TV to talk about Jujutsu Kaisen, the creator of the plot, Gege Akutami confirmed that some of his characters were inspired by other famous characters from anime and manga. For starters, we can talk about Aoi Todo, a brutal and sympathetic warrior who, according to Akutami, was made in reference to Zenpachi Zaraki, one of the more eccentric characters in Bleach.
For Akutami, the inspiration even goes into the name itself. The mangaka reveals that he wanted a “strong and impressive” name, just like Zaraki’s. So he ended up going with Aoi Todo, who has the same strength. Besides himself, Akutami also revealed that the antagonist Suguru Geto is also inspired by another villain from another story: Shinobu Sensui, by Yu Yu Hakusho.
For him, the Shinobi arc is reflected in Suguru’s story, particularly in the way the two begin to become disillusioned with humanity and embrace an inner evil.
Jujutsu Kaisen is available on Crunchyroll. Its twenty-first episode will be broadcast on Saturday March 6.
