Classic Batman and Superman movies to have sequels in new comics

Batman and Superman both had multiple performers in the movies, but Michael Keaton and Christopher Reeve are certainly among the most popular. Now, DC Comics is preparing to return to the film world with the two in a new digital comic book miniseries, due out later this year (via ComicBook).

Titled Superman ’78 and Batman ’89, the two mini-series will feature adventures based on Batman, a film released in 1989 and directed by Tim Burton, and Superman: The Film, which premiered in 1978 and was directed by Richard Give. Both will continue exactly where the films left off and feature six chapters each, released weekly.

The stories will show, in addition to the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman and Christopher Reeve’s Superman, the return of several other characters from these films, who are to be portrayed with the characteristics of the actors who played them.

What will Batman 89 look like?

Batman ’89 will show the adventures of Bruce Wayne after the events of Batman: The Return, 1992, also directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton. The story will be written by Sam Hamm, screenwriter of the hero’s first two films, while illustrator Joe Quinones (Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man) will handle the art.

The official synopsis for the miniseries says:

Continuing the dark adventures of DC’s Dark Knight from classic Tim Burton films, Batman ’89 features screenwriter Sam Hamm (Batman, Batman: The Return) and artist Joe Quinones to pull out some details left by the director. The Gothic mentality behind this world, while rooted in a sense of realism, helped create the first impressions of many fans around the world on Gotham’s Dark Knight. In the new series, Hamm and Quinones will show the return of Selina Kyle / Catwoman, in addition to the debut of a new Robin! Plus, Quinones has a vision for Harvey Dent / Two faces that comes as close as possible to comics!

What will Superman 78 look like?

Like Batman ’89, the Superman ’78 miniseries will bring back the lived-in hero incarnation of Christopher Reeve, who immortalized the Man of Steel forever in theaters and made such an impression that, for many fans, the actor follows being the final version of Krypton’s Last Child. Rob Venditti (Gavião Negro) signs the screenplay and artist Wilfredo Torres (Batman ’66) illustrates the editions.

Check out the synopsis below:

“In the vein of DC’s plans for Batman ’89, Rob Vendiitti and Wilfredo Torres will collaborate on Superman ’78 to tell stories about the world that Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve created in Superman: The Movie. In Superman 78, audiences are surprised and excited about Superman’s skills, while Lois Lane (again!) Doesn’t know that Clark Kent is secretly the hero. The sheer emotion of seeing a man fly, jump or stop a ball will be reflected in this environment where Superman has just been introduced! Inspired by the Donner classic, with a timeless superhero storytelling style, Superman ’78 will show fans that a man can truly fly.
