Announced in 2018, the film is finally starting to take shape!
And Warner continues to bet heavily on the DC Extended Universe in theaters, with multiple projects featuring the publisher’s heroes taking place at the same time. Among them, Besouro Azul, the first film to play with a Latin superhero, who has just chosen his director.
According to The Wrap, Angel Manuel Soto of Charm City Kings will direct the film for Warner Bros. It will be the first major blockbuster of his career, which until then was limited to short films and author dramas. The Blue Beetle movie began development two years ago and has continued without much news until that point.
At the site, he confirmed the news:
“It’s an honor to direct Besouro Azul, DC’s first film with a Latin superhero. I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.
What is the blue beetle?
Created by Charles Wojtkowski in 1939 for Fox Comics, the Blue Beetle was originally Dan Garret, a cop who used experimental vitamins to develop superpowers. From the 1950s, the character was reinvented, becoming an archaeologist who received his powers from ancient Egyptian technology.
In the 60s, Ted Kord appeared, the most famous version of the hero, created by Steve Ditko. A genius inventor, he is president of Kord Industries and was a member of the International Justice League, the most comedic phase of the supergroup in which he acted alongside heroes such as Golden Gladiator, Fire, Guy Gardner and Mars Hunter.
In 2006 came the most recent version of the hero: Jaime Reyes, introduced during the Infinite Crisis saga. A Latin teenager from El Paso and devoted to his family, he acquires the powers of the blue scarab from an alien beetle, which has settled at the base of his spine and given him a costume and powers. The character has been successful, appearing in several animated series and games, and will be the protagonist of the film directed by Angel Manuel Soto.
Blue Beetle does not have a premiere date yet.
