[PHOTOS] ODYSSEY OF CHAMIONS RECAP AND RESULTS

It was a night of big surprises and upsets for ONE Championship’s Odyssey of Champion card in Jakarta.

A planned title showdown between Narantugalag Jadambaa and Marat Gafurov was switched after Jadambaa was unable to enter the country due to an apparent visa dispute.

Stepping up for an interim title shot was Australian Martin Nguyen, who bravely took on the Russian on 48 hours notice. Nguyen was due to fight Bashir Ahmad, but said he received the call from ONE’s top brass and was willing to step up.

The last minute switch did little to disrupt Gafurov, who made quick work of Nguyen in the main event of the evening.

Nguyen stepped into the cage with confidence and initiated an early, but ill-fated takedown. Gafurov almost immediately reversed the position and sunk in a rear naked choke and finish the fight 41 seconds into the first round.

Meanwhile Vincent Latoel showed once again why he is a deadly striker, by finishing French mixed martial artist Arnaud Lepont in a devastating fashion.

Lepont suffered a cut early and that may have prompted him to try for a guillotine choke, but failed to secure the hold.

Early into the second round Latoel floored Lepont and followed up with a barrage of punches, finishing the bout with a head kick.

Latoel left the cage before the result was announced and was taken directly to hospital suffering cuts and facial fractures. He will undergo surgery to fix his nose today.

Roger Huerta and Koji Ando put on one of the best performances of the night with a fired up Huerta showcasing a new set of skills and was able to pepper Ando with a high volume of strikes.

In one of the most exciting rounds of the year so far, Ando landed a left punch that dropped Huerta and unleashed a barrage of punches. Huerta’s chin held up and he continued to trade blows with Ando in a wild brawl.

It was a spirited performance by Huerta but Ando was awarded the unanimous decision victory.

Aleksei Butorin announced his arrival on the global stage with a sensational knockout of former title contender Leandro Ataides. Butorin survived what seemed like an extremely tight kimura submission attempt from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and managed to land several blown, ending the fight with a perfectly timed head kick.

Earlier in the card Singapore’s Angela Lee took just four minutes to put away Egypt’s Mona Samir. She continuously broke down Samir with strikes while remaining in top position. Samir eventually succumbed to a rear naked choke as Lee remains undefeated in her professional mixed martial arts career.
