Top Rank and Def Promotion, the promotional muscle behind Hong Kong boxing star Rex Tso, have announced a landmark deal that will see “the Wonder Kid” have his next three bouts hosted in Hong Kong.
Top Rank CEO Bob Arun touched down in the city on a whirlwind tour en route to Shanghai to make the announcement that will culminate in a World Boxing Association title fight towards the end of 2016.
“Depending on dates and clearing, we will have our first event in May. Rex’s first two fights in Hong Kong will be regional fights leading up to a world title fight in December.
Undefeated Tso (18-0-0) could see his first fight as soon as May at The Convention Centre, with a second pegged for September. Arum said a world title fight would be held in December should plans fall into place.
While not confirmed, it is likely that Tso will face 36-year-old South Korean Young Gil-bae (26-5-1) in May before meeting Thailand’s WBA No 2 ranked Norasing Kokietgym (18-0-1) in September.
“It’s an ambitious program,” Arum said, but one which launches a series of fights in Hong Kong along with Def Promotions, which he described as very exciting.
Tso’s last match in Hong Kong sold out within three days and Arum said the room at The Convention Centre would essentially double the audience size, but a bigger hall had already been booked for the September bout.
Asked why the promotion had selected Hong Kong over Macau, Arum said the Macau casino business had dropped significantly.
“We developed the Macau market, but that is in a bit of trouble right now. The revenue stream has slowed, so we’re bringing the fights to where the people are in Hong Kong and we think we will get tremendous support for a guy with tremendous talent.”
